What are the customs and practices for Frost Descent 2021?

The Frost Descent in 2021 falls on October 23, and the specific customs and practices can be summarized into the following five points:
】Eating persimmons
During the Frost Descent season, people in some places eat persimmons, which can not only keep you warm but also nourish your bones and muscles. Persimmons are generally fully ripe around the time of Frost Descent. At this time, the persimmons have thin skin, fresh and delicious flesh, and high nutritional value, but you should be careful to eat them in moderation.
】Appreciating red leaves
"Frosted leaves are redder than February flowers." After the Frost Descent, maple trees, cotinus coggygria and other trees, soothed by the autumn frost, begin to turn red and yellow all over the mountains, looking like a sea of fire, which is very spectacular. People usually go out to climb mountains and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
】Appreciating autumn chrysanthemums
Since ancient times, chrysanthemum has been regarded as "grass for waiting for the season" by the ancients and has unusual cultural significance. It is considered to be "the guest of longevity" and "the grass of immortality" and has become a symbol of vitality. The Frost Descent season is when the autumn chrysanthemums are in full bloom, so climbing mountains and admiring chrysanthemums has become an elegant activity during this season.
Pulling carrots
There is an agricultural proverb in Shandong area: "In the beginning of summer, sorghum is grown; in the white dew, valley is harvested; in the Frost Descent, radishes are picked", so people in Shandong like to eat radishes in the Frost Descent. White radish is a low-priced plant-based food with high nutritional value. There is a folk saying since ancient times: "Eat radish in winter and ginger in summer, and you don't need a doctor's prescription." In modern times, some people also call radish "wild ginseng."
】Eating beef
In many places, there is a custom of eating beef during the Frost Descent Festival. For example, in Yulin, Guangxi, residents are accustomed to eating beef noodle soup for breakfast and beef fried with radish or beef brisket stew for lunch or dinner on the day of Frost's Descent to replenish energy and pray for warmth and strength in the winter.

Origin of the Frost Descent

Around October 23rd of the Gregorian calendar every year, when the sun reaches 210 degrees of the ecliptic longitude, it is the Frost Descent, one of the 24 solar terms. Frost Descent is the last solar term in autumn and the transitional solar term from autumn to winter.
In late autumn, the ground dissipates a lot of heat and the temperature suddenly drops below 0 degrees. The water vapor in the air directly condenses on the ground or on plants to form tiny ice needles. Some become hexagonal frost flowers, which are white in color and have a loose structure.
"Frost Descent" means the weather is getting colder and dew condenses into frost. In ancient my country, Frost Descent was divided into three stages: the first stage was when jackals were sacrificed as sacrifices, the second stage was when grass and trees turned yellow and fell, and the third stage was when stinging insects crawled down.
The jackals begin to capture prey, offering sacrifices to heaven with animals to repay their parents, and also to offer sacrifices to the autumn gold. The leaves on the ground turn yellow and fall, and the stinging insects all stay in their holes, motionless and uneaten, with their heads down, entering hibernation.

Legend of the Frost Descent

Frost Descent is a solar term associated with the goddess Fairy. This woman's name is Wu Jie, also known as Qingnv. She is said to be the sister of Wu Gang, the one who chopped the osmanthus tree, and the goddess in charge of frost and snow.
On September 14 of that year, she came down to the human world and stood on the highest peak in the center of Qingyao Mountain. She played a seven-stringed harp with her hand, and clear sounds came out slowly. Frost and powder snowflakes floated down along with the trembling strings and sprinkled on the ground. Frost and snow cover up all the impurities in the world.
Perhaps because she has always been accompanied by cold, the image of Qingnv is full of solemnity, and the pretentious literati have played a big role in this. Because they didn't like the falling of plants and trees, they blamed the crime on Qingnv.
Han Shan's poem says, "I often see withered willow catkins, which are often killed by the Green Lady." Zhang Xian's poem "Nan Xiang Zi" says, "The blood-colored light silk skirt is torn into pieces. All flowers have turned to frost, and the jealous girl is the God of Spring. She secretly plucks two flowers to borrow from the beginning of spring." The name "jealous" was added for no reason, as if the Green Lady was jealous of the beauty of the flowers and insisted on letting frost fall on the earth.
Yao Nai's poem: "This year Qingnv is too lazy to bloom, and the yellow flowers have not yet bloomed on the branches on the ninth day." It is also Qingnv's fault that the chrysanthemums have not bloomed. The amorous Nalan Xingde did not let her go either: "Frost has fallen on the silver pond, bringing a new coolness, but the young girl is too frivolous."
The most widely circulated poem is Li Shangyin's "Frosty Moon": "When I first heard the migrating geese, there were no cicadas anymore; the water reached the sky from the hundred-foot-high building. Qingnu and Su'e are both cold-resistant, and they compete for beauty in the frost on the moon." Qingnu and Chang'e are not afraid of the cold, so they run to the Moon Palace to compare each other's appearance.
