The Beginning of Autumn marks the end of summer and the beginning of cool autumn. It is a solar term that reflects the season. The ancient Chinese divided the Beginning of Autumn into three stages: the first stage is the arrival of cool breezes; the second stage is the appearance of white dew; and the third stage is the chirping of cicadas. In ancient times, the beginning of autumn was called the Beginning of Autumn Festival and was a very important festival. As early as in the Zhou Dynasty, on the day of the Beginning of Autumn, the emperor would personally lead the three dukes, six ministers, princes and officials to the western suburbs to welcome the autumn and hold a ceremony to worship Shaohao and Rushu. Later it gradually evolved into a custom where in autumn the emperor would personally lead all civil and military officials to set up an altar on the outskirts of the city to welcome autumn. After the beginning of autumn, the days will become shorter and shorter.This is because when the Earth revolves, the angle (inclination angle) between the Earth's axis and the plane of its orbit always remains at 66°33′. Therefore, sometimes the Northern Hemisphere is inclined towards the sun, and sometimes the Southern Hemisphere is inclined towards the sun, and the position of the sun's direct rays on the earth is also different. The sun's direct point varies between 23°27′ south latitude and 23°27′ north latitude throughout the year. We call the two lines of latitude at 23°27′ north and south the Tropic of Capricorn and the Tropic of Cancer respectively. When the sun's direct point changes, the length of the day arc and night arc formed by the intersection of the terminator and the latitude circle will also change. When the sun is directly above the Tropic of Cancer, it is the northernmost point of the sun in the year. At this time, at the equator, the arc of day and the arc of night are the same length, and the day and night time are equal, both 12 hours; in the northern hemisphere, between the equator and the Arctic Circle (that is, the latitude of 66°33′ north latitude), the arc of day is longer than the arc of night, and the day is longer than the night; the area north of the Arctic Circle has only day and no night, and this phenomenon is called eternal daylight. In contrast to the situation in the Northern Hemisphere, between the equator and the Antarctic Circle in the Southern Hemisphere (i.e. the latitude of 66°33′ south latitude), the night arc is longer than the day arc, and the night is longer than the day; in the area south of the Antarctic Circle, there is only night and no day, and this phenomenon is called eternal night. When the sun is directly above the Tropic of Capricorn, it is the southernmost time of the year. At this time, the length of day and night is exactly the opposite at all latitudes except the equator.
