What day is March 3rd in the immortal world? What is the origin of the legend?
The third day of the third month in the lunar calendar is the Shangsi Festival in ancient times. It is late spring and people go out for outings, bathe, purify themselves and pray for blessings during this festival. For Taoism, the third day of the third lunar month is also quite important. What day is March 3rd in the immortal world? What legends are there in this? Let’s take a look together below.

1. Queen Mother’s Birthday

Taoism regards the third day of the third lunar month as the birthday of the Queen Mother. According to legend, the Queen Mother had two magic weapons: one was the elixir that could make her immortal. The mythical Chang'e flew to the Moon Palace after stealing the elixir that her husband Houyi got from the Queen Mother. The second is to eat the fairy peaches that can prolong life - Pantao. The main dish at the Queen Mother's banquet is peaches, so it is called the Peach Banquet. Therefore, the third day of the third lunar month has also become an important Taoist festival. The immortals also regarded being invited to the banquet as a symbol of honor and status. Legend has it that Dongfang Shuo, a famous humorous writer in the Han Dynasty, once sneaked into the Peach Banquet, stole peaches successfully, and ascended to become a god.

2. Birthday of Zhenwu Emperor

The third day of the third lunar month is also the birthday of the Taoist deity Zhenwu Emperor. The full name of Zhenwu Emperor is "Beizhentian Zhenwu Xuantian Emperor". He was born in the ancient Xuanyuan era on the third day of the third month in the Chinese calendar. He is the Taoist god in charge of military affairs and war. Taoist temples in various places (such as Wudang Mountain in Hubei, Longhu Mountain in Jiangxi, Qiyun Mountain in Anhui, and Qingcheng Mountain in Sichuan) hold grand rituals on March 3rd. Taoist believers will also burn incense and pray in temples on this day, or chant scriptures and pray at home. The "Zhenwu Mountain Taishang Zhenwu Stele" provides a concise and artistic explanation of the origin of Zhenwu the Great, the major Zhenwu dojo in the country, and Zhenwu's "benevolent heart" of "saving the army from disaster." It explains the origin and significance of people commemorating the Zhenwu Emperor on March 3rd.

3. Birthday of Emperor Xuanyuan Huangdi

According to the book "Records of the Grand Historian", Huangdi was the son of Shaodian. His surname was Gongsun and his name was Xuanyuan. He lived in Xuanyuan Hill. Legend has it that the third day of the third month of the lunar calendar was his birthday, so there has been a saying since ancient times that "On the second day of the second month, the dragon raises its head; on the third day of the third month, Xuanyuan is born." In order to commemorate the birthday of Huangdi, the first ancestor of human civilization, since ancient times, people would go outing on March 3rd, or have banquets with friends and relatives by the water. Since the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, there have been activities to worship the Yellow Emperor's birthday on the third day of the third lunar month. According to the records in books such as "Records of the Grand Historian", "Classic of Mountains and Seas" and "Book of Changes", the emperor's hometown is Xinzheng City, Zhengzhou, Henan. There are records of paying homage to Emperor Huang in the historical books of the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period.
