The third day of the third month in the lunar calendar was the Shangsi Festival in ancient times. It has a long history and can be traced back to ancient times. Although the Shangsi Festival has disappeared from our lives today, March 3rd as an important festival is still preserved in the traditional culture of many ethnic minorities. What is the origin of March 3rd? Let’s take a look. The Origin of March 31. The Origin of Shangsi FestivalThere are many origins of Shangsi Festival, but fundamentally speaking, they are inseparable from primitive religious beliefs. According to historical records, there was a religious activity called purification ceremony on the Shangsi day of March in the Zhou Dynasty. The so-called "purification" refers to the exorcism of disease and making it clean; "wedge" refers to cleansing the body. Purification is a sacrificial activity that involves washing the body to get rid of disasters and pray for blessings. In the Zhou Dynasty, there were professional witches in charge of this matter. Later, it evolved into content such as wine flowing by the winding stream, outings, and young men and women choosing their mates. 2. The Zhuang Nationality’s March 3rd Festival The March 3rd customs of many ethnic minorities are still influenced by the traditional Shangsi Festival, retaining some of its core while integrating some local folk legends, giving today's "March 3rd" more ethnic color. March 3rd of the Zhuang ethnic group is also known as the Song Festival. According to legend, there was a pair of lovers in ancient times who often sang folk songs to express their love. However, due to the constraints of feudal ethics, the two could not get married, so they both committed suicide for love. In order to commemorate the couple, people sang songs to express their condolences on the third day of March. 3. Li Nationality’s March 3rd Festival March 3rd is a traditional auspicious festival for the Li and Miao people to commemorate their ancestors, celebrate the new life, praise life and pursue love. According to legend, a long time ago, the Li people living on the banks of the Changhua River suffered a severe flood. All people and animals died, leaving only a pair of siblings, Tianfei and Nanyin. They sat in a gourd and floated to Yanwo Ridge, where they were stuck by branches and survived. After the brother and sister grew up, they decided to look for partners separately and agreed to meet at Yanwo Ridge every March 3rd. As a result, after a few years, both of them returned empty-handed. The younger sister reluctantly tattooed patterns on her face with bamboo sticks and dyed it with plants so that her brother would not recognize her and would marry him, thus allowing the race to continue. So, on March 3rd of that year, they got married at the foot of Yanwo Ridge. From then on, they spun yarn and wove cloth, had children, reclaimed wasteland for farming, dug ponds for raising fish, and reproduced on Yanwo Ridge. This is the legend of the Li ethnic group’s March 3rd Festival and the custom of face tattooing. |
