The Origin of Arbor Day

】Origin 1:
my country's Arbor Day has been revised three times due to the evolution of the times.
After the Revolution of 1911, in the 4th year of the Republic of China, Zhou Ziqi, the Minister of Agriculture and Commerce, proposed to the President to designate the Qingming Festival of each year as Arbor Day.
Dr. Sun Yat-sen passed away on March 12, 1925. In order to commemorate this great man, the Kuomintang government in 1930 changed the Arbor Day to March 12 every year.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, in 1979, at the suggestion of Deng Xiaoping, the Sixth Session of the Standing Committee of the Fifth National People's Congress decided to designate March 12 of each year as my country's Arbor Day.
】Origin 2:
Soon after the establishment of the Nanjing government of the Republic of China, with Sun Yat-sen as the provisional president, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry was set up in May 1912, under which the Forestry Bureau was established to be in charge of national forestry administrative affairs; in November 1914, the first "Forest Law" in modern Chinese history was promulgated.
In July 1915, at the initiative of Sun Yat-sen, the Beiyang government at the time officially ordered that Qingming Festival be designated as Arbor Day every year. A designated location is set, tree species are selected, and governments, institutions, and schools at all levels across the country participate as scheduled, hold Arbor Day ceremonies and engage in tree planting. After being approved on July 21 of that year, an order was issued to the entire country to follow the procedures as scheduled. Since then, our country has had Arbor Day.
On March 12, 1925, Dr. Sun Yat-sen passed away. In 1928, the National Government held a tree planting ceremony to commemorate the third anniversary of Sun Yat-sen's death. In order to commemorate Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the day of his death, March 12, was designated as Arbor Day.
After the Northern Expedition was completed in 1928, the Kuomintang government issued a nationwide order on April 7: "The Qingming Tree Planting Day in the old calendar should be changed to a tree planting ceremony to commemorate the death of the Premier." On February 9, 1929, the Ministry of Agriculture and Mining issued a ministerial order to announce the 16-article "Provisional Regulations on Tree Planting in Each Province for the Tree Planting Ceremony to Commemorate the Death of the Premier." Yi Peiji, Minister of Agriculture and Mining of the Executive Yuan of the National Government, followed the instructions of Dr. Sun Yat-sen and actively promoted afforestation. In February 1930, he submitted a proposal to the Executive Yuan and the National Government to designate March 9-15 as "Afforestation Movement Propaganda Week" and to hold a tree planting ceremony on the 12th, the anniversary of Dr. Sun Yat-sen's death. In the northern region, it is still not suitable for planting trees in early March as the cold weather has not dissipated yet. Therefore, it is specially stipulated that the tree planting ceremony will still be held on March 12, and the afforestation publicity campaign will be carried out during the Qingming Festival. The ministry also announced the seven-article "Outline for the Afforestation Campaign Publicity Week in each Province, Special Municipality and County" for the whole country to follow.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, in February 1979, the Sixth Session of the Standing Committee of the Fifth National People's Congress, based on the proposal of the State Council, formally passed a resolution to designate March 12 of each year as Arbor Day. The significance of this resolution is to mobilize people of all ethnic groups across the country to actively plant trees and accelerate the pace of greening the motherland and various forestry construction. Designating the day of Sun Yat-sen's death as my country's Arbor Day is also to commemorate his great achievements and to symbolize that his unfulfilled wishes during his lifetime will be realized in New China.
