Pi Xie and Tian Lu are both traditional auspicious beasts in China, but in the eyes of most people, there seems to be no difference between them. So, what is the difference between Bixie and Tianlu? Illustration of Tianlu to ward off evil spirits! When looking at sculptures from past dynasties, the beasts with the highest probability of appearing are Pi Xie and Tian Lu. Many people will buy some items to ward off evil spirits and place them in their homes, but they don’t know much about their specific functions. Shui Mo Net has prepared an article with a detailed explanation of items to ward off evil spirits. You are welcome to check it out.

What is the difference between Bixie and Tianlu?

There are written records of warding off evil spirits in Jukuzhou in "Records of the Ten Continents in the Sea" by Dongfang Shuo, a rhetorician of the Western Han Dynasty. In the Three Kingdoms period, Meng Kang, a scholar of the Wei State, wrote in his annotations to Ban Gu's "Book of Han·Biyu" that "Taoba, also known as Fuba, resembles a deer with a long tail. Those with one horn may be Tianlu, and those with two horns may be Pixie."
There is also a record in "Mengxi Bitan" by Shen Kuo of the Northern Song Dynasty: "There are two beasts beside the Zongzi monument in the north of Nanyang County, one is called Tianlu and the other is called Pixie." The records in "Mengxi Bitan" are even more backed by physical evidence. The two stone beasts, Tianlu and Pixie, in front of the tomb of Zongzi, the prefect of Runan in Nanyang during the Eastern Han Dynasty, which are now preserved in the Nanyang (now Nanyang City, Henan Province) Han Painting Museum, both have inscriptions engraved on their bodies, one with "Tianlu" engraved on its arm and the other with "Pixie" engraved on its arm.
If they are the same thing, why are they described by different names in the annotations, and the difference between the two is also explained? What's more, there are existing Eastern Han Dynasty objects as evidence, which shows that Tianlu and Pixie are obviously not the same thing, but just belong to the same kind of mythical beasts. Stone carvings of Pixie and Tianlu are mostly used in the tombs of emperors and generals, and can be used in pairs, similar to placing two stone lions in front of a house, two door gods, and upper and lower couplets; Tianlu and Pixie are placed on both sides of the tomb passage, which means "protecting the throne and fortune, and suppressing ghosts and evil spirits."

The evil-repelling object looks like a lion with wings. The appearance of Tianlu and Pixie is highly similar in the hands of craftsmen of all generations. Since Tianlu is often compared with Pixie, it is not surprising that Tianlu and Pixie are similar in appearance.
The method of distinguishing them is actually very simple. You can clearly distinguish them from the pictures of Bixie and Tianlu. The one-corner one is Tianlu, and the two-corner one is Bixie.
