——Days for tomb sweeping and fire ban:
Tomb-Sweeping Day is closely related to Cold Food Festival. According to legend, during the Spring and Autumn Period, Duke Wen of Jin was exiled for 19 years during his childhood. His minister Jie Zitui accompanied him. When Duke Wen was extremely hungry, Jie Zitui cut off meat from his thigh to feed him. This is the famous story of "cutting flesh to serve the king" in ancient times.
Later, Duke Wen of Jin came to power and granted fiefs and rewards to his ministers and generals, but he did not reward Jie Zitui. Jie Zitui, regardless of fame and fortune, took his mother and lived in seclusion in Mianshan, Shanxi. Soon, a minister mentioned Jie Zitui. Duke Wen of Jin felt uneasy and led his people to Mianshan to look for him, but there was no trace of him. In order to force Jie Zitui out of the mountain, Duke Wen of Jin ordered the mountain to be burned. Three days later, the fire was extinguished, and Jie Zitui and his mother were seen hugging each other and dying under an old tree. Duke Wen of Jin was extremely sad, and buried Jie Zitui with great honor. He also changed the name of Mianshan to Jieshan (hence the place name "Jiexiu" in Shanxi).
He ordered that starting from the day when Mianshan Mountain was burned, which was the day before Qingming Festival, fireworks were banned throughout the country for three days, every household had to eat cold food, and temples were built to commemorate the event.
The "Ye Zhong Ji" of the Eastern Jin Dynasty recorded: "The custom in Bingzhou is to light the fire one hundred and fifty days after the winter solstice and eat cold food for three days."
By the Tang Dynasty, the Cold Food Festival became even more popular everywhere. "Old Book of Tang Dynasty·Records of Emperor Xuanzong" records: "On the Cold Food Day of May, Guimao, the tomb visit should be recorded in five records and it will become a permanent practice."
The Song Dynasty stipulated that there would be three days from "Cold Food" to "Qingming" to sweep tombs.
——In this way, Qingming Festival, outing, ancestor worship and Cold Food Festival are all cross-festival activities.
