What is the Cold Food Festival?

Cold Food Festival is a traditional Chinese festival, which is held 105 days after the winter solstice in the lunar calendar and one or two days before Qingming Festival. At the beginning of the festival, fireworks are prohibited and only cold food is eaten. In the development of later generations, customs such as tomb sweeping, outing, swings, kicking football, tug-of-war, and cockfighting were gradually added. The Cold Food Festival lasted for more than two thousand years and was once known as the largest folk festival in China. Cold Food Festival is the only traditional festival of the Han nationality that is named after a food custom.
The origin of the Cold Food Festival, according to historical records: During the Spring and Autumn Period, Prince Chong'er of Jin State fled to another country for 19 years to avoid disaster. The minister Jie Zitui followed him all the time and never left him; he even "cut off his own flesh to feed the king."
Chong'er worked hard to govern the country and became a famous monarch known as "Duke Wen of Jin". But Jie Zitui did not seek fame and fortune, and retired to Mianshan with his mother. In order to force him to come out to meet him, Duke Wen of Jin ordered the mountain to be set on fire. Jie Zitui refused to come out and was eventually burned to death.
Duke Wen of Jin was grateful for his loyal minister's determination, so he buried him in Mianshan, built a shrine and a temple for him, and ordered that no fire be burned and only cold food be eaten on the day of Jie Zitui's death to express his grief. This is the origin of the "Cold Food Festival".

Ancient Cold Food Festival

The Cold Food Festival, also known as the "No Smoking Festival", "Cold Festival" and "Hundred and Five Festival", is a continuation of the ancient custom of changing fire. In early spring, the climate is dry, and not only are the fires kept by people prone to fires, but spring thunder can also easily cause forest fires.
The ancients would hold grand sacrificial activities during this season and extinguish all the fires passed down from the previous year, which was called "fire ban". Then they would drill new fires as the starting point of production and life in the new year, which was called "changing fire" or "asking for new fire".
When changing the fire, a grand sacrificial ceremony is held, during which symbols of the grain god Ji are burned, which is called human sacrifice. This custom was passed down and later became the Fire Ban Festival. There was a time interval between the ban on fire and the change of fire, and historical records have different estimates of three days, five days, seven days, etc.
During this period without fire, people had to prepare enough cooked food to survive the day with cold food, which was called "Cold Food", hence the name "Cold Food Festival". The Cold Food Festival has lasted for more than two thousand years and is known as the largest festival among the people.
