Why is the Chinese Valentine’s Day called the Qiqiao Festival?

On the night of the seventh day of the seventh month in the lunar calendar, women would pray to the Weaver Girl for wisdom and ingenuity in their courtyards, hence the name "begging for ingenuity". The original Qiqiao Festival was not to commemorate the love between the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl, but to commemorate the Weaver Girl, who was called "Seventh Sister" by the people. Therefore, the Chinese Valentine's Day is first and foremost a women's festival, and the Weaver Girl is regarded as the goddess of weaving and the object of worship for women in ancient times. On the night of the seventh day of the seventh month, mortal women would beg her for wisdom and skills, and of course, they would also ask for a happy marriage.
Later, the love story of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl was incorporated into the Qiqiao Festival, and the girls believed it to be true. So every seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar, when the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl meet on the Magpie Bridge, the girls would come under the flowers and the moon, look up at the starry sky, looking for the Altair and the Weaver Girl on both sides of the Milky Way, hoping to see the annual meeting, begging God that they could be as dexterous as the Weaver Girl, and hoping to meet their destined person and have a happy and fulfilling marriage life. Over time, the Qixi Festival was formed.

Three ways to beg for skill

1. Threading a needle to pray for dexterity
This is the earliest recorded way of begging for skills, which became popular during the Han Dynasty and has been continuously developed. On the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar, the palace maids of the Han Dynasty would compete in threading silk threads through the holes of various needles. People at that time followed suit, and this is recorded in detail in "Xijing Miscellaneous Records".
2. Happy spiders should be clever
Needle threading for dexterity, which emerged later than the Han Dynasty, was popular among people during the Southern and Northern Dynasties. The Southern Dynasties' "Jingchu Sui Shi Ji" records that if a spider is placed in a small box filled with fruits, the density of the spider's web can be used to judge whether it is skillful or clumsy the next morning.
3. Test your skill by throwing a needle
This custom was very popular in the Ming and Qing dynasties. On the day before the Chinese Valentine's Day, "mandarin duck water" would be poured into a wash basin and left outdoors overnight. On the day of the Chinese Valentine's Day, the basin would be exposed to the sun for the whole morning, and then the "testing of luck" could begin at noon. Water exposed to sunlight will form a thin film on its surface. Place a sewing needle gently on the film. If the shadow of the needle appears under the water is a straight line, it means that the "begging for skill" has failed. If it is in various shapes, it means that the "skill" has been obtained.
