The Buddhist Origin of Laba FestivalMore than 2,500 years ago, before becoming a Buddha, Sakyamuni gave up his throne and became a monk. After six years of ascetic practice, he only ate one grain of hemp and one grain of wheat a day, and gradually his body became extremely thin. Finally I realized that people in this world chase after material desires and are obsessed with sensual pleasures. Excessive enjoyment will certainly not lead to liberation; and blindly clinging to asceticism will only cause physical suffering and increase attachment to the body, and there is no way to achieve enlightenment. Only by abandoning both extremes of suffering and happiness can one move towards the great enlightenment of Bodhi. So, he readjusted his method of practice, stood up from the ascetic seat, walked down to the Nilavansa River, and let the perennially pure water wash away the dirt on his body. There were two cowherds by the Nile River, one named Nanda and the other named Pala. They were deeply moved and admired Shakyamuni because of his pious and ascetic practice. Seeing that Shakyamuni was willing to accept the vow, he hurriedly selected a fat cow, bathed it in the river, squeezed out the milk, steamed it into gruel, filled a bowl with it, held it in front of him, and worshiped and offered it. Shakyamuni accepted the offering and made a vow, saying: "The food I eat now will replenish my energy and strength, so that I can preserve my wisdom and longevity to save all living beings." Then he ate the food. From then on, Sakyamuni received milk gruel offered by the shepherdesses every day. A month later, he felt strong and regained his former strength. He went to the Nile River to bathe and wash clothes. He felt refreshed and radiant. Afterwards, he came to the place now called Bodh Gaya, and sat on the Vajra Seat under a tall and lush pipal tree (also translated as the bodhi tree, i.e. the fig tree), meditated, and made a vow: "If I do not attain the perfect enlightenment of Buddhahood, I would rather break my body into pieces than get up from this seat!" In this way, Sakyamuni sat cross-legged under the Bodhi tree for forty-eight days, until the seventh day of the twelfth lunar month. That night, the sky was clear and the breeze was gentle. Shakyamuni sat silently on the Vajra Seat, demonstrating various states of meditation. He observed the infinite worlds in the ten directions and all things in the past, present and future, and had a deep understanding of the cause and effect of the three realms. In the early morning of the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, a star appeared in the sky. He suddenly had an epiphany and attained the supreme path, becoming a fully enlightened Buddha. From then on, the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, the day of enlightenment of our teacher Shakyamuni Buddha, became a grand and solemn commemorative day in Buddhism, and Laba Festival came from this. The Buddhist scriptures say that when Sakyamuni attained enlightenment, the earth shook, all gods and humans in heaven praised him, the many sufferings in the three realms of hell, hungry ghosts and animals were temporarily relieved, heavenly drums sounded, making wonderful sounds, and the sky rained mandala flowers, red sand flowers, golden flowers, silver flowers, glazed flowers, precious flowers, and seven-treasure lotus flowers.
