Analysis of the origin of the Ghost Festival!

The name "Zhongyuan Festival" originated in the Northern Wei Dynasty, and "Zhongyuan" is a Taoist term. Taoist classics call the 15th day of the first lunar month the Shangyuan, the 15th day of the seventh lunar month the Zhongyuan, and the 15th day of the tenth lunar month the Xiayuan. They also match "Three Yuan" with "Three Officials", saying that the God of Heaven blesses those born on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, and the God of Earth... on the fifteenth day. 1Taoists regard the 15th day of the seventh lunar month as the day when the Earth God pardons sins. At that time, the Earth God will inspect and examine the performance of gods, mortals, and animals in heaven and on earth in order to convict and pardon sins. The Eastern Han Dynasty's Laozi Chapter quoted the Daojing: "On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, the day of the Zhongyuan Festival, the Earth Official will select the people and distinguish the good from the evil... On that day, he will recite this sutra day and night. The great saints of the ten directions will chant the spiritual chapters together. Prisoners and hungry ghosts will be freed at that moment."
The "Record of Cultivation" also says: "On the Zhongyuan Day of July, the Earth God descends to determine the good and evil of the world. Taoists recite scriptures that night, and hungry ghosts and prisoners are also freed."3 Therefore, on the 15th day of July, Taoists will hold the "Zhongyuan Pudu", performing rituals with three animals and five fruits to save the lonely ghosts of the ten directions, and praying for good weather, peace and prosperity for the country and the people. People would prepare rich sacrificial offerings to worship the Earth God and their ancestors.

What is the Ghost Festival?

The Zhongyuan Festival, also known as the ancestor worship festival on the 15th day of the seventh month, is also known as the Ghost Festival, the Zhaigu Festival, and the Earth Official Festival. The main festival customs include worshiping ancestors, releasing river lanterns, worshiping the dead, and burning paper ingots. The Zhongyuan Festival evolved from the "mid-July" harvest festival in ancient times when people would offer sacrifices to their ancestors. The Mid-Autumn Festival is a festival for people to celebrate the harvest and thank the earth in early autumn. When some crops mature, people will worship their ancestors and offer new rice as sacrifices to report the autumn harvest to their ancestors. It is a traditional cultural festival that commemorates ancestors, and its cultural core is respecting ancestors and being filial.
The "Mid-July Festival" was originally a folk festival for ancestor worship in ancient times, and it was called the "Zhongyuan Festival" because of the Taoist saying after the Eastern Han Dynasty. Taoism believes that the 15th day of the seventh lunar month is the birthday of the God of Earth. On the day of praying to the God of Earth to forgive sins, the underworld will release all ghosts and the deceased ancestors can return home for reunion. Therefore, the 15th day of the seventh lunar month to worship ancestors is called the "Zhongyuan Festival"; in Buddhism, it is called the "Yulanpen Festival". During the Tang Dynasty when the rulers promoted Taoism, the Taoist Zhongyuan Festival began to flourish, and gradually "Zhongyuan" was fixed as the name of the festival and has been used to this day. The Zhongyuan Festival, Shangyuan Festival and Xiayuan Festival are collectively called the "Three Yuans".
