The Origin of Cold Food Festival

Cold Food Festival in Ancient Times
The Cold Food Festival is also known as the "No Smoking Festival", "Cold Festival" and "Hundred and Five Festival". It is a continuation of the ancient custom of changing fire. In early spring, the climate is dry, and not only are the fires kept by people prone to fires, but spring thunder can also easily cause forest fires. The ancients would hold grand sacrificial activities during this season and extinguish all the fires passed down from the previous year, which was called "fire ban". Then they would drill new fires as the starting point of production and life in the new year, which was called "changing fire" or "asking for new fire". When changing the fire, a grand sacrificial ceremony is held, during which symbols of the grain god Ji are burned, which is called human sacrifice. This custom was passed down and later became the Fire Ban Festival. There was a time interval between the ban on fire and the change of fire, and historical records have different estimates of three days, five days, seven days, etc.
During this period without fire, people had to prepare enough cooked food to survive the day with cold food, which was called "Cold Food", hence the name "Cold Food Festival". The Cold Food Festival has lasted for more than two thousand years and is known as the largest festival among the people.
Cold Food Festival in the Spring and Autumn Period
The Fire Ban Festival was later transformed into the Cold Food Festival to commemorate Jie Zitui, a famous minister and righteous man of the State of Jin during the Spring and Autumn Period. Legend has it that when Duke Wen of Jin was in exile, Jie Zitui cut off his own flesh to feed him. Duke Wen of Jin returned to his country and became a prince, enfeoffed his ministers. However, Jie Zitui refused to accept the reward, so he took his old mother and lived in seclusion in Mianshan. Later, Duke Wen of Jin went to Mianshan in person to invite Jie Zitui, but Jie Zitui was unwilling to be an official. Hiding in the mountains, Duke Wen of Jin's men set fire to the mountain in an attempt to force Jie Zitui to show up. As a result, Jie Zitui was burned to death under a big willow tree while holding his mother. In order to commemorate this loyal and righteous man, Duke Wen of Jin issued an order: on the day of Jie Zitui's death, no fire should be lit to cook, and only cold food should be eaten, which was called the Cold Food Festival.
Cold Food Festival during the Wei and Jin Dynasties
During the Han Dynasty, the people of Shanxi Province banned fire for a month to commemorate the festival. During the Three Kingdoms period, Emperor Cao Cao of Wei ordered the abolition of this custom. There is a sentence in "Yin Fa Ling", "I heard that Taiyuan, Shangdang and Yanmen all stopped burning and celebrated cold food 150 days after the winter solstice. It is said to be for Zitui", which prohibits people from eating cold food. The offender shall be sentenced to half a year's imprisonment for the head of the family, 100 days' imprisonment for the chief official, and one month's salary deprivation for the chief official". After the Three Kingdoms were returned to the Jin Dynasty, the custom of abstaining from fire and eating cold food on Cold Food Day in memory of Jie Zitui was restored because of the homonym and character of "Jin" in the Spring and Autumn Period. However, the duration was shortened to three days. At the same time, the idea of holding Cold Food Day to commemorate Jie Zitui was spread all over the country, and thus Cold Food Day became a national festival, and abstaining from fire and eating cold food on Cold Food Day became a common custom of the Chinese nation.
