Spring Festival customs in Taiwan

1. Say goodbye to the old year on New Year's Eve . Taiwanese people say goodbye to the old year on New Year's Eve. They place offerings on the table, kowtow to their ancestors, thank the gods and ancestors for their blessings, and pray for more blessings in the new year. 2. Gathering around the fire on New Year's Eve On New Year's Eve, the whole family will gather around the table to eat the most sumptuous reunion dinner of the year. A baking stove is placed under the table and copper coins are placed beside the stove to show prosperity. This is called "gathering around the fire". The dishes eaten around the fire also have meanings. For example, a whole chicken is eaten because “chicken” and “home” are homophones, and “whole chicken” means “whole family”, so it is a wish for a happy family. 3. Sky Lanterns in the North and Beehive Fireworks in the South . Of course, just like in mainland China, the lantern festival is the highlight of the Lantern Festival in Taiwan. In addition to the traditional lantern festival, the most famous one is the "Sky Lanterns in the North and Beehive Fireworks in the South". "Northern Sky Lanterns" refers to the sky lantern-lighting and blessing activity in Pingxi Township, Taipei County. Sky lanterns, also known as Kongming lanterns, are said to have originated from the custom of Kongming's descendants releasing sky lanterns on the Lantern Festival to commemorate their ancestors. Pingxi sky lanterns have always been a beautiful sight during Taiwan’s Lantern Festival. 4. Taitung’s “Firecrackers for Handan Ye” Taitung’s firecrackers for Handan Ye is a very distinctive activity during the Lantern Festival in Taiwan. There are several versions of the legend of Handan Ye. Some people believe that Handan Ye is Zhao Gongming, the God of Wealth and War, while others believe that he is Xuantan Marshal. The developed folk custom of setting off firecrackers for Handan Ye has the effect of removing plague and means driving away poverty and loneliness. The more firecrackers are set off, the better the fortune will be in the coming year. 5. Beehive Fireworks in Yanshui, Tainan Among the traditional Lantern Festival celebrations in Taiwan, the most shocking effect is the beehive firework in Yanshui, Tainan. "Beehive Fireworks" is also known as "beacon firework". The more formal name should be "Cong Beehive Fireworks" or "Zong Beehive Fireworks", which means the firework of a swarm of bees leaving the nest, so the people of Yanshui also call it "releasing bees".
