What are the customs of Chinese New Year's Day?

Today's Chinese New Year is still based on the Lunar New Year, so on New Year's Day, some customs and habits are certainly not as grand as the Spring Festival, but it is also a big festival after all, so there must be some different customs to celebrate. For example, now more common are activities organized by groups, such as New Year's Day parties, hanging slogans to celebrate New Year's Day, or holding collective activities. In the past, there were organizations beating drums and gongs and collective folk dances, and you can still see them on TV documentaries. With the development of science and technology today, it has evolved into galas and the like. New Year's Day means only a one-day holiday for the younger generation. The traditional Chinese way of celebration is still preserved among the people, especially in the rural areas. Every New Year’s Day, every household would set off firecrackers, kill chickens and geese, and after paying homage to various gods, the family would gather together for a meal.

The Origin of Chinese New Year

New Year's Day, commonly known as "New Year" in most countries in the world, is the first day of the new year in the Gregorian calendar. Yuan means "first"; Dan means "day"; "New Year's Day" means "first day". The word "New Year's Day" first appeared in "Book of Jin": "Emperor Zhuanxu took the first month of summer as the beginning, which was actually the New Year's Day of spring." In ancient China, the first day of the twelfth lunar month or the tenth lunar month was regarded as New Year's Day. Starting from Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, it was January 1st in the lunar calendar, and starting from the Republic of China, it was January 1st in the Gregorian calendar. That’s January 1st every year. On September 27, 1949, the First Plenary Session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference resolved: "The People's Republic of China shall adopt the Gregorian calendar," which is what we call the Gregorian calendar. In order to distinguish the two New Years of the lunar calendar and the solar calendar, and in view of the fact that "Lichun" in the 24 solar terms of the lunar calendar falls around the Lunar New Year, the first day of the first lunar month was renamed "Spring Festival" and January 1 of the Gregorian calendar was designated "New Year's Day". Since then, New Year's Day has become a happy festival for people across the country.
