What is the significance of the Yi Torch Festival?

The Torch Festival is called "Duzhe" in Liangshan Yi language, which means "fire sacrifice"; the magical deeds of the fire god Aidigu are described in the ritual songs "Sacrifice to the God of Fire" and "Sacrifice to the Guozhuang Stone". In short, the original form of the Torch Festival is the ancient worship of fire. As the most grand festival of the Yi ethnic group, grand sacrificial activities are held in all Yi villages from the 24th to the 27th day of the sixth lunar month every year to offer sacrifices to heaven and earth, fire, ancestors, drive away evil, and pray for the prosperity of livestock and a good harvest of grains. This reflects the Yi people's good wishes to respect the laws of nature and pursue a happy life. During the Torch Festival, each village would tie a large torch made of dry pine wood and pine torches and erect it in the village. Small torches would be erected in front of each house and lit at night, illuminating the village. At the same time, people would hold small torches in their hands and march in groups at the edge of the village and between the ridges of the fields on the mountains, inserting the torches and pine torches in the corners of the fields. Looking from a distance, the fire dragon reflected the sky, winding and undulating, which was very moving. Finally, young men and women gathered in the square, piled up many torches into a fire tower, sang and danced all night long.
