What are the customs and cultures of March 3rd in Guangxi?
March 3rd is one of my country's traditional cultural festivals. There is even a saying among the people that "On February 2nd, the dragon raises its head; on March 3rd, sacrifice is made to Xuanyuan." Guangxi attaches great importance to these festivals. The arrival of the third month of the lunar calendar means the end of spring and the beginning of summer. As the weather gets hotter, the Fortune Teller website lists for you the festivals and solar terms of the third month of the lunar calendar in 2018!

Five-color glutinous rice board

Before the festival, every family prepares five-colored glutinous rice plates and colored eggs. People pick red orchid grass, yellow rice flowers, maple leaves, and purple ivy, and use the juice of these plants to soak glutinous rice to make five colors of glutinous rice: red, yellow, black, purple, and white. According to legend, this food was passed down after being highly appreciated by fairies; some also say it was used to worship the singing fairy Liu Sanjie. Eating this kind of food will make the family prosperous and the body healthy. Easter eggs are items used by young men and women to communicate and express their emotions during singing festivals.

Playing bronze drums

Some ethnic minorities in Guangxi have always had the habit of beating bronze drums during festivals, celebrations or sacrifices, and this custom has been passed down to this day. Now the Zhuang people in Donglan, Tian'e and other places celebrate the March 3rd Festival and the Spring Festival every year, the Yao people in Du'an, Bama, Dahua and other places celebrate the Zhu Festival, the Yao people in Nandan hold funerals and sacrifices, and the Miao people in Zhongbao, Nandan celebrate the Spring Festival or encounter festive occasions by beating bronze drums to express their congratulations or condolences.

Hydrangea Love

The hydrangeas at the singing festival are handicrafts made by girls before the festival. The workmanship is very delicate, and each one is a silk handicraft: twelve petals are connected into a round sphere, and each petal represents a month of the year and is embroidered with the flower of that month. Some hydrangeas are made in square, polygonal shapes, etc. The hydrangea is filled with bean, millet or cotton seeds. The ball is connected to a silk ribbon with silk tassels and decorative beads hanging down, symbolizing pure love.

Easter Eggs

Easter eggs are boiled eggs dyed in different colors to express love. During the singing festival, a young man would hold a colored egg and try to touch the egg in the girl's hand; if the girl didn't want to, she would hold the egg and not let the boy touch it; if she was willing, she would let the boy touch it. After the egg cracked, the two people ate the Easter egg together, which sowed the seeds of love. Nowadays, touching the Easter eggs has the meaning of "touch, touch, touch for good luck".

Grab the fireworks

On the third day of the third lunar month and after the autumn harvest, people in some ethnic minority areas of Guangxi will spontaneously organize a firecracker grabbing movement. Men, women, young and old will all wear festive attire and rush to the venue at dawn. Those who grab the fireworks are considered the most blessed in the coming year and are the most favored by girls.
Each team participating in the firecracker grabbing game has 8 people. The team members rush into the opponent's artillery position by breaking through, blocking, changing direction, and rushing quickly, and scoring by placing the fireworks. The rules are similar to those of Western rugby, so it is called "Oriental rugby". The traditional "firecracker" is an iron ring with a diameter of about 5 cm, wrapped with red cloth or red silk. The competition venue is usually set up on the river bank or hillside. There is no limit on the number of people or the number of teams. Every shot must be grabbed and the game ends after three shots.

Beating the pole

Beating with a carrying pole is a traditional self-entertainment activity. Every Zhuang family member is an actor in "Dazhehtang". Women's movements are light and graceful, while men's movements are vigorous and powerful. "Dazhehtang" for self-entertainment carries the Zhuang people's wish for a good harvest.
The dance forms of carrying a shoulder pole include various sets such as couple dance, four-person dance and multi-person dance. There are usually even numbers of dancers. The performers hold carrying poles in their hands and gather around a bench or rice pounding trough, rhythmically beating the bench or bumping the carrying poles against each other. The shoulder pole can be used freely in the hands and can be hit from the front, back or side. The sounds it makes are either crisp or deep, and each sound is different, forming a rhythm with brisk rhythm and regular ups and downs. As the carrying poles continue to collide, the performers keep spinning and turning, which is even more dazzling. Various movements are performed with great skill and ease amid the sound of the carrying pole hitting each other.

Singing and talking about love

The March 3rd Singing Festival is a good opportunity for young men and women to socialize. Every time there is a singing festival, young men and women from dozens of miles around gather at the festival. The young man sang with the girl he liked under the guidance of the singing teacher.
Usually, young men will take the initiative to sing "tour songs" first, observe and look for opponents, and when they meet the right one, they will sing meeting songs and invitation songs. If the woman is interested, she will agree. The young men sang the questioning song again, and they developed friendship with each other, singing love songs and friendship songs. The lyrics are all improvised and spoken out spontaneously. If the girl is satisfied with the man's talent and singing ability, she will quietly give the hydrangea in her arms to her beloved while others are not paying attention. "He" will respond with something like a handkerchief or towel, and then their singing will become even sweeter, and they will get married.
Before the singing competition, the statue of Liu Sanjie is carried by the crowd in a parade, and people pray to her to grant them singing talent and bless everyone to have good luck in the singing competition on March 3rd. After paying tribute to the singing fairy Liu Sanjie, people vied with each other to sing, with the voices rising and falling one after another. Men, women, young and old spent sleepless nights in this singing festival.
