There are many traditional festivals in my country, and each festival has its own stories and legends, which is a major feature of the culture. As one of my country's traditional festivals, the Dragon Raising its Head naturally has its own legends. Spring is a great time full of energy, with everything reviving and full of vitality. Please come to the Fortune Teller website to learn more details about the second month of the lunar calendar in 2018!Legend story 1:There is a proverb that goes “On the second day of the second month, the dragon raises its head.” Legend has it that in ancient times, there was a long drought in the Guanzhong area, so the Jade Emperor ordered the dragon from the East China Sea to sow rain. The little dragon was playful and dived into the river and never came out. A young man went to the cliff to collect some "Dragon-Subduing Water" to muddy the river water. The little dragon emerged from the river to challenge the young man. The little dragon was defeated and had to sow rain. In fact, the so-called "Dragon Raising its Head" means that after hibernation, all insects begin to wake up. Hence the saying goes, "On February 2, the dragon raises its head, and scorpions and centipedes also show their heads."Legend story 2:Another name for "February 2" is Spring Dragon Festival. Xu Shen's "Shuowen Jiezi" records: "Dragon is the king among all scales. It can be dark or bright, small or huge, long or short. It ascends to the sky at the spring equinox and dives into the abyss at the autumnal equinox." This is probably the earliest record of the custom of "Spring Dragon Festival".According to legend, when Wu Zetian became emperor, the Jade Emperor ordered that no rain should fall on earth for three years. But the Jade Dragon in charge of the Milky Way could not bear to see the people suffer from the disaster and starve, so he secretly sent down a heavy rain. When the Jade Emperor found out, he knocked the Jade Dragon in charge of the Milky Way down from the Heavenly Palace and pressed him under a huge mountain. There is also a monument at the foot of the mountain, on which is written: The Dragon King violated the rules of heaven by bringing rain, and should be punished by the mortal world for thousands of years. If you want to climb Lingxiao Pavilion again, you have to wait until the golden beans bloom. In order to save the Dragon King, people searched everywhere for the flowering golden beans. On the second day of the second month of the following year, people were turning over and drying the golden corn seeds when they suddenly remembered that the corn was like golden beans. If they were fried and blossomed, wouldn't that be the golden beans blossoming? So every household popped popcorn, set up an table in the yard, burned incense, and offered the "blooming golden beans" for the Dragon King and the Jade Emperor to see. The Dragon King knew that it was the people who were saving him, so he shouted to the Jade Emperor: "The golden beans are blooming, let me out!" When the Jade Emperor saw the golden beans blooming in the yards of every household on earth, he had no choice but to issue an edict, ordering the Dragon King to return to heaven and continue to create clouds and rain for the world. From then on, it became a custom among the people that on the second day of the second lunar month, people would pop popcorn and fry beans. Adults and children alike would chant, "On the second day of the second month, the dragon raises its head, the big granaries are full, and the small granaries are overflowing." In some places, stove ash is spread into big circles in the yard, and grains are placed in the middle, which is called "da granary" or "filling the granary." The meaning is to wish for a good harvest and full granaries in the new year. Legend story three:"On the second day of the second month, the dragon raises its head and spring rain falls everywhere. A thunderclap shakes the world, but who knows that the Dragon King is worried." There is a touching story in this nursery rhyme with a strong earthy flavor.A long, long time ago, the Dragon King of the East Sea gave birth to three dragon sons, but was missing a dragon daughter. The Dragon King thought, how wonderful it would be if he had another princess, and both a son and a daughter! When the Queen Mother knew about this, she gave the Dragon Mother an elixir, and soon the Dragon Mother became pregnant. On February 2 of the following year, the Dragon Mother gave birth to a plump, fair daughter. The little princess grew up day by day, and became tired of the life in the Dragon Palace. She longed to go to the human world to find true happiness. The Dragon Mother knew her daughter's heart, so she advised the princess, "Child, there is no worry in the Dragon Palace, and you have everything you want. Why do you want to go to the human world?" The dragon girl said, "The dragon's sons and grandsons only know how to eat, drink and have fun. I must go to the human world and find a truly fun life." The Dragon Mother saw that her daughter was determined. He quietly sent her out of the Dragon Palace and gave her a magic bag. The Dragon Girl reluctantly said goodbye to her mother, flew over ninety-nine rivers, crossed ninety-nine mountains, and came to the foot of a big mountain. The princess looked around, and saw that the land near and far was cracked, the crops were drooping, and the sun was scorching the earth. Not far away, a young man was working hard in the field. The princess walked over and asked, "It's so dry, will you get any harvest from your farming?" The farmer smiled bitterly and said, "What can I do? My old mother at home depends on me for support!" The Dragon Girl felt sorry for him, took out a few red beans from her brocade bag, and scattered them on the ground. After a while, thick fog rose from the field, and the dry seedlings turned green. When the farmer saw this, he hurriedly bowed to her and said, "Fairy, there is a severe drought here for hundreds of miles. Please save the poor people." The Dragon Girl was very moved. She thought, what a good person he is, always thinking about others. What a soulmate of mine! So she grabbed a handful of red beans from her brocade bag and threw them into the sky. Suddenly, lightning flashed and thunder roared, and a heavy rain fell. After the rain, the sky cleared up, the mountains turned green, the crops turned green, and people showed happy smiles on their faces. The young man thanked the girl gratefully. The princess' face turned red and she said, "No need to thank me. I just hope we can live happily together forever." After hearing that, the young man happily took the girl home. When the Dragon King found out that the princess had left the Dragon Palace, he was very angry and did not allow the Dragon Mother to see her daughter. The Dragon Mother missed her daughter every day. Every year on the second day of the second lunar month, she would float to the surface of the sea, raise her head and cry bitterly in the direction her daughter left. Her cries turned into thunder and her tears turned into spring rain. |
