His mother was vicious and cruel during her lifetime. After her death, she was imprisoned in a cell in the underworld. When he visited his mother in prison, he often brought food to her, but it was all eaten by the jailer and the little devil who was guarding her. Later, he thought of an idea. He mixed glutinous rice with water chestnuts, peanuts, red dates, longans, brown sugar and other ingredients, cooked them into sweet porridge, put them in a bowl, sprinkled a handful of black sesame seeds on it and sent it to his mother.
When the jailer saw that the porridge was black, he asked, "What is this?" Mulian replied casually, "This is ao jiu porridge (in Fuzhou dialect, "jiu" and "gu" are homophones)." The jailer believed it and thought the porridge was dirty, so he dared not eat it. Therefore, the "ao jiu porridge" was delivered to Mulian's mother, saving her from hunger.
It is said that the day when Mulian delivered the porridge was the 29th day of the first lunar month (i.e. the 29th day of the first lunar month), and Mulian's mother was also 29 years old that year. In Fujian custom, the first lunar month is divided into "three nines", the ninth day of the first lunar month is called "the upper nine", the nineteenth day is called "the middle nine" and the twenty-ninth day is called "the last nine", so this porridge is called "the last nine porridge". Later, because the porridge was black in color, it was called "the black nine porridge", and because Mulian was filial to his mother, it was also called "the filial nine porridge".
No matter it is the 29th day of the first lunar month or the 29th year, both are the years when Mulian's mother fell into misfortune. So people in Fuzhou regard the number nine as a taboo, believing that "nine" is a year of misfortune. Therefore, people who turn "nine" must eat Taiping noodles, and married daughters must also send "nine" to their parents, in order to pray for their parents' safety and health.
