I know my brothers are climbing the mountain, but there is one less person wearing the dogwood branches. The Double Ninth Festival is on the ninth day of the ninth month of the lunar calendar, which is called "Double Ninth". The Confucian view of Yin and Yang after the middle of the Han Dynasty has six Yins and nine Yangs. Nine is a yang number, so the ninth day of the ninth month is also called "Double Ninth Festival". The Double Ninth Festival, along with the Chushi Festival, Qingming Festival and Yu Festival, are also the four major traditional Chinese festivals for ancestor worship. People have the custom of climbing heights on this day, so the Double Ninth Festival is also called the "Climbing Heights Festival." Since the ninth day of September is pronounced as “九九” which sounds like “久久” (long lasting), people often worship their ancestors and carry out activities to respect the elderly on this day. The evolution history of the Double Ninth Festival The Double Ninth Festival was mentioned as early as in the "Chu Ci" during the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period. In Qu Yuan's "Far Journey", it is written: "Gathering on Double Ninth Festival, I entered the imperial palace and visited the Qingdu at the beginning of the ten days." The "Double Ninth Festival" here refers to the day, not the festival. In the Letter to Zhong Yao on the Ninth Day of the Ninth Month written by Cao Pi, Emperor Wen of Wei during the Three Kingdoms period, the banquets on the Double Ninth Festival were clearly written: "Years go by and months come, and suddenly it is the ninth day of the ninth month again. Nine is a yang number, and the sun and the moon correspond to each other. People praise its name and think it is suitable for longevity, so they enjoy banquets and reunions on this day." In the preface to the poem "Leisure on the Ninth Day of the Ninth Month", Tao Yuanming, a scholar of the Jin Dynasty, said: "I am at leisure and love the name of Double Ninth Festival. The garden is full of autumn chrysanthemums, but I have no wine to drink. I can only wear the chrysanthemums of the ninth month in vain and express my feelings through words." Chrysanthemums and wine are mentioned here at the same time. Probably during the Wei and Jin Dynasties, the custom of drinking and appreciating chrysanthemums on the Double Ninth Festival had already become a tradition. In the Tang Dynasty, Double Ninth Festival was officially designated as a folk festival. In the Ming Dynasty, on the Double Ninth Festival in September, the whole palace would eat flower cakes together to celebrate, and the emperor would personally climb Wansui Mountain to express his feelings about autumn. This custom was passed down until the Qing Dynasty. In the Qing Dynasty, the customs of the Ming Dynasty were still popular. Since the 1980s, some places in China have designated the ninth day of the ninth month of the lunar calendar as Elderly Day, advocating that the whole society establish a culture of respecting, honoring, loving and helping the elderly. In 1989, the Chinese government designated the ninth day of the ninth lunar month as "Old People's Day" and "Respect for the Aged Day". On December 28, 2012, China's National People's Congress Standing Committee voted to pass the newly revised "Law on the Protection of the Rights and Interests of the Elderly." The law clearly states that the ninth day of the ninth month of the lunar calendar every year is Senior Citizens' Day. |
