If a Feng Shui master wants to determine the direction of water, he will use the red line (some use white line) in the middle of the compass (tray) to indicate the place where the water is. He then rotates the circular compass to make the magnetic needle parallel to the bottom of the Tianchi Lake. He then sees what word the red line points to on the circular disk, and then he can infer whether the direction is auspicious or inauspicious based on Feng Shui theory.
