Introduction: When we were young, what we loved most was listening to stories told to us by the older generation. There were all kinds of stories, and we listened to them with great interest. Well, in this issue of Feng Shui Story, the editor will tell you a story about the legend of Wuling Well in western Hunan. Let’s take a look at it together below! Folk wisdom is compiled into stories, including many Feng Shui stories. Let’s take a look at them. Passing through the Shuixi Gate in the ancient city of Wugang in western Hunan, and walking a short distance along a small street called Xinling Street, you can see a rectangular well under the railings beside the street, with clear well water overflowing from the gap on one side of the well. Walking along the stone steps beside the railing to the well, I saw shallow ripples on the water surface, and the well water was as clear as nectar. On the other side of the well is a Dragon King Temple. The local people have always firmly believed that where there is water there is the Dragon King, and the two are interdependent. On the stone slabs at the edge of the corridor of the Dragon King Temple, there are three powerful characters engraved: Wuling Well. Wuling Well is one of the 28 ancient wells in Hunan, and is as famous as Liuyi Well in Junshan, Dongting Lake and Baisha Well in Changsha. It is also one of the "Ten Scenic Spots of Duliang" (Wugang was formerly known as Duliang), named "Spring Scenery of Wuling". Wuling Well is built with bluestone slabs and is rectangular in shape, about 7 feet long and more than 3 feet wide. The well is about seven or eight feet deep. Standing by the well, you can see silk grass swaying at the bottom, which shows how clear the water is. The water from Wuling Well is very abundant. It flows out from the gap continuously all year round. It is warm in winter and cool in summer, and has a slightly sweet taste. Wuling Well was originally an unnamed well. One morning, someone came to fetch water and saw a few peach petals floating on the water. Thinking they were flowing from the well, he treated it as big news and asked nearby residents to come and see. After everyone looked at it, they all agreed that the peach blossoms were indeed flowing from the well water. So people used their imagination to trace the source of the well water. When peach blossoms flowed out of the well, people concluded that its source was a place with peach blossoms. At this point, an idea suddenly flashed through the mind of a learned scholar, and he immediately said, "The source of the well water is in Peach Blossom Spring." In order to make the villagers believe, he shook his head and recited Tao Yuanming's "Flower Spring" in a rhythmic manner: "Suddenly I came across a peach blossom forest, which was several hundred steps long on both sides of the bank. There were no other trees in the forest, the grass was fresh, and the fallen petals were colorful..." After reciting, he continued, "The fairyland of Peach Blossom Spring is in Wuling. Since our well water flows out from there, it must be fairy water. Let's call this well Wuling Well!" Everyone applauded, and later the official also recognized this name. No matter whether one is an official or a commoner, who has read Tao Yuanming's "Peach Blossom Spring" would not like that fascinating realm? Soon, people planted peach trees around the well. In spring, peach blossoms bloomed every day, bright and beautiful like rosy clouds. When the wind blew, the peach blossoms fell, and naturally peach blossoms "flowed out" of the well again. The legend of Wuling Well spread, and more and more people came to admire and drink the well water. When the Tang Dynasty poet Wang Changling visited Wugang, he wrote a popular poem "Wuling Spring Scenery": "Red peach blossoms adorn the early spring, and the clear and deep sweet wells are full of new beauty: the east wind has seen all the delicate flowers, but no fishermen are interested in them." Following Wang Changling's footsteps, many literati and poets came to Wuling Well to visit and left behind many beautiful poems. Chen Yuyi, a poet in the Song Dynasty, once built a thatched house in Wugang and lived there for more than 10 years. He left behind a poem "Spring Scenery in Wuling" which was selected into the local chronicles of Wugang. The poem goes: "The way to the fairyland was lost that day, why is Wuling named again? I thought that spring is always at the entrance of the cave, and peach blossoms are flowing by the stream." Summary: The above article is a detailed analysis of this Feng Shui story. You can read it.
