Qingming

"Collection of Explanations of the 72 Lunar Calendars" states: "In the third month...at this time, everything is clean, neat, clear and bright."
In the book "A Hundred Questions on Sui Shi", it is said: "All things grow, and at this time they are all clean and bright, so it is called Qingming."
Qingming Festival is known as one of the four major traditional Chinese festivals for ancestor worship, along with Chushi Festival, Yu Festival and Jiusan Festival. Qingming Festival is the only holiday in Taiwan, mainland China, Hong Kong and other places that is determined according to the lunar calendar's solar terms. In Macau, there is also the winter solstice.
Qingming is the fifth solar term in the 24 solar terms in the lunar calendar, marking the official beginning of the spring season; the Qingming solar term begins when the sun reaches 15 degrees of the ecliptic longitude.
"Almanac": "Fifteen days after the spring equinox, the Big Dipper points to Ding, which is the Qingming period. All things are clean and clear. At this time, the air is clear and the scenery is bright, and all things are visible.
According to Chinese tradition, the 15 days starting from Qingming Festival are divided into three stages every 5 days: "The first stage is when the tung flowers begin to bloom; the second stage is when the field mice turn into quails; the third stage is when rainbows begin to appear." This means that in this season the white tung flowers bloom first, then the field mice that like the shade disappear and return to their underground holes, and then rainbows can be seen in the sky after the rain.

Records of the Qingming solar term

The field mouse turned into a quail. According to the notes in Er Ya, the mole is as big as a mouse, with a head like a rabbit, a hairy tail, and a green-yellow color. It likes to eat millet and beans in the fields, so it is called a field mouse. "Compendium of Materia Medica" and "Su Wen" say: Quail is a quail, similar to a pigeon but smaller. "Er Ya·Explanation of Birds": 鴽, 鴾母. Guo's note: It is a {酓鸟}, and people in Qingzhou call it 鴾母. Mr. Bao said: Rat is a yin species, while quail is a yang species. Because the yang energy is strong, it turns into a quail, which is because yin is transformed from yang.
The rainbow begins to appear. Hong (rainbow) is also called rainbow. In poetry, it is commonly pronounced in the departing tone. The annotations say: It is the energy of the meeting of yin and yang, so the ancient scholars believed that when the clouds are thin and the sun leaks through, and the sun shines on the raindrops, a rainbow will appear. Now, if you spit water on the sun and look at it from the perspective of a sword, the halo will be a rainbow. Zhu Zi said: When the sun and the rain interact, they suddenly become something. The interaction of yin and yang that should not happen is the lustful energy of heaven and earth. "Hong" is male and its color is red and white, while "Ni" is female and its color is blue and white. However, both characters are derived from the character for "insect". "Shuowen" says: It resembles the shape of a cricket. The books also say: I once saw a rainbow entering a stream to drink water, and its head was like a donkey. I'm afraid there are such things in the universe, but they are just named after the rainbow.
Qingming Festival, March Festival. According to "Guoyu", there are eight winds at the time. The calendar alone refers to the Qingming wind as the March festival, because this wind belongs to the Xun element. All things are in harmony with Xun. At this time, all things are clean, orderly, clear and bright.
Tong Shihua. Tong is the name of a tree. There are three kinds: the one that is flashy but not fruitful is called white tung, which is what "Erya" calls the flourishing tung tree; the one with green bark and fruitful is called phoenix tree, which is also called green tung, which is what "Huainanzi" calls the broken-horned phoenix tree; the one that grows on hills and has large seeds with oil is called oil tung, which is what Mao Shi calls the phoenix tree that does not grow on hills. The one that is just beginning to bloom is the white tung tree.

Pay attention to health during the Qingming solar term

The Qingming Festival is a time when many chronic diseases (such as arthritis, asthma, mental illness, etc.) are prone to relapse. People with chronic diseases should avoid eating "irritating foods". The so-called "irritating foods", from the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, refer to foods that are easy to cause wind and phlegm, produce poisons, increase fire and evil, such as marine fish, shrimps, crabs, pickles, bamboo shoots, hairy bamboo shoots, mutton, rooster, etc.
At the same time, you should not take any tonics to the liver during this solar term. During the Qingming Festival, you should eat more foods that can soften the liver and nourish the lungs, such as shepherd's purse, which benefits the liver and harmonizes the stomach; spinach, which benefits the five internal organs and promotes blood circulation; yam, which strengthens the spleen and nourishes the lungs; and clams, which benefit the yin and benefit the liver.
It is advisable to drink "Qingqian Tea" to nourish the liver, clear the head, resolve phlegm, eliminate thirst, and refresh the mind. According to traditional Chinese medicine health theory, the liver belongs to wood, wood generates fire, fire is the heart, and the heart fire will be too strong during this solar term, so this period is prone to hypertension. Patients with hypertension should attach great importance to this, try to keep a good mood, choose gentle exercises that combine movement and rest, eat at regular times and in regular amounts, and avoid overeating; obese patients with hypertension should eat less sweets, limit calorie intake, and eat more fruits and vegetables; elderly people with hypertension should place special emphasis on a low-salt diet and increase potassium intake accordingly. The health-preserving soups and dishes that are suitable for consumption during this solar term include carrot, sugarcane juice, wolfberry and pork liver porridge, pepper stewed pork tripe, Chuanxiong and Angelica dahurica stewed fish head, leek wrapped in dog belly fish, fresh wild yam stewed with pork belly, pickles and yellow sand clams, cat's claw stewed with lean pork, mulberry and coix seed stewed white pigeon, etc.
