Huineng is the sixth patriarch of Chinese Zen Buddhism. His common surname was Lu. His ancestors were from Fanyang, Hebei (now Zhuo County). His father was exiled to Xinzhou, Lingnan (now east of Xinxing County, Guangdong). Huineng was born in the 12th year of Zhenguan in the Tang Dynasty (638), so he became a native of Xinzhou, Guangdong. Huineng lost his father at a young age and later moved to the South China Sea. His family was poor and he supported his mother by selling firewood. One day, Neng was in the city and heard someone reciting the Diamond Sutra in an inn. He understood it quite well, so he asked where the sutra came from. The guest told him that he had received the sutra from Zen Master Hongren of Dongfengmao Mountain in Huangmei. This made him want to find a teacher. At the beginning of Xianheng (670), after settling his mother down, he headed north. When he arrived at Caoxi in Shaozhou, he met a villager named Liu Zhilue, who brought his aunt, the nun Wu Jinzang, who had left the country, to ask for a book with the Nirvana Sutra in hand. Huineng said: Although I cannot read, I still understand its meaning. Ni said: Since you can't read, how can you understand the meaning? Huineng said: The wonderful principles of the Buddhas have nothing to do with words. When the nun heard what Huineng said, she was deeply surprised, so she told the elders in the village, and they came to pay her respects. She invited Huineng to live in the local Baolin Ancient Temple and called him Lu Xingzhe.
