In addition to the grand and festive celebrations of the Spring Festival, we also need to pay attention to some taboos regarding the Spring Festival. Next, let’s take a closer look at the Spring Festival special topic compiled by Mr. Shui Mo!The Origin of the Birthday Celebration on the Third Day of the First Lunar Month in XianyouXianyou has a birthday celebration custom that is different from other places. When an elderly person turns ten, no matter what month or day they were born, the birthday celebration is usually held on the third day of the first lunar month of that year. It is said that the origin of this custom is related to the fairy dream of Jiuli Lake.It is said that the mother of a scholar suddenly became blind due to illness. The scholar was a well-known filial son. In order to cure his mother's eye disease, he gave up going to Beijing to take the imperial examination and sought medical treatment everywhere. After years of searching, there is no result. I heard that the fairy dream in Jiuli Lake was very effective, so I went to Jiuli Lake specifically to pray for eye drops. That night, the scholar dreamed that the immortal said: "People come to the mountains to find white water, and the cure is in the temple behind." The next day, the scholar woke up, carefully thought about the meaning of the words of the immortal in his dream, and went to the back of the temple to look for medicine. He saw a spring behind the temple. The water was clear and transparent, and many people came here to fetch water. I heard from others that this is a magical spring that can cure many diseases, and it will never dry up no matter how dry the weather is. After hearing this, the scholar was overjoyed, for when he heard the word "Xianquan", he immediately thought of what the immortal said in his dream last night: "People go into the mountains to look for clear water." "People entering the mountain" should be the word "Xian", and "Bai Shui" should be the word "Quan", and the two words together are "Xianquan". What he prayed for was eye drops, and the immortal told him to go to the temple to look for it. It was obvious that the fairy spring was the eye drops, so he was overjoyed. He immediately filled a bottle and hurried home. The day the scholar returned home was the third day of the first lunar month. His mother had just turned 70 this year. “It is rare for a person to live to be 70 years old,” and there was a custom in the village that when a person turned 70, all the villagers would go to his home to congratulate him during the first lunar month. Today, we heard that a scholar had brought back the magical spring from the distant Jiuli Lake to treat his mother's eyes. All the villagers came to the scholar's house, one to congratulate him and the other to see the magical spring. Unexpectedly, when the scholar used spring water to clean his mother's eyes, it did not help. Just when everyone was getting anxious, they heard someone outside the door say, "Chi Hexi is here." Everyone looked and found that it was the old doctor in the village. He heard that the scholar had retrieved the fairy spring, and came in as he spoke. When the old doctor saw that the scholar used spring water directly to wipe his mother's eyes, he quickly said, "No, no!" After that, he ordered an empty bowl to be brought out, and a bag of flour that had just been brought was poured into the bowl, and then the spring water was poured in and stirred. After making it into a wet dough, it was applied to the old lady's eyes. Then he ordered the spring water to be boiled into tea for her to drink. After a few hours, the old lady's eyes were healed as before, and everyone couldn't help but cheer for the magical spring. Just now when the scholar heard the old doctor say "late to congratulate", he couldn't help but be stunned. Now that he saw his mother's eyesight had recovered, he remembered another sentence that the immortal told him in the dream; "The cure lies in the temple (late) and the congratulations later." It turned out that the immortal's words had a double meaning. The first sentence was to guide him to find the location of the fairy spring, and the second sentence was to imply that the one who cured his mother's eye disease was the old doctor who "came late to congratulate". The scholar thanked the Jiuli Lake Immortal for the eye drops, and also thanked the old doctor for his good eye treatment, which cured his mother's eyes. So he solemnly presented a valuable gift to the old doctor. At that time, the most valuable gift in the countryside was pig's trotters. Because the old doctor brought flour when he came to congratulate, and the scholar gave pig's feet in return, people used the phrase "give flour and get pig's feet in return" to express the reciprocity of courtesy. After a long period of circulation, it became a local saying in Xianyou. The scholar wanted to thank his neighbors for coming early to congratulate him out of concern for his mother's eye disease, so he wanted to invite them to have lunch at noon. No one was willing to do so. As they were pushing each other around, the scholar suddenly had an idea and said, "My mother's 70th birthday is in March. To celebrate her improved eyesight, we would like to move the birthday celebration forward to today as a double celebration. How about all the neighbors give me some honor and have a simple meal with us to celebrate her birthday?" The scholar's suggestion was a proper gift, so no one could refuse it, and they all agreed to stay and have the birthday wine together. After a lively birthday banquet, the scholar felt that since he had just given a gift to the old doctor, he should also give gifts to his neighbors. There happened to be a bumper harvest of oranges this year, and the family's mountain orange orchard had harvested several large baskets. So, each guest was given a pair of oranges before they left, to wish them good luck. From then on, when people in Xianyou celebrated their birthdays, no matter which month their birthdays were, they would celebrate on the third day of the first lunar month of that year. Those who celebrated the birthdays would bring flour (later changed to noodles) as a gift, and the birthday host would also give oranges in return to show good luck. This became a custom of the locals and has continued to this day. Summary: Through the above article, we know the origin of the birthday celebration on the third day of the first lunar month in Xianyou, Fujian. I believe that everyone has gained more knowledge like the editor. I hope you will like it. I wish you all good health, happiness, peace and success in the new year! |
