Astronomer, astrologer, forecaster, feng shui master, Taoist priest, fortune teller, Yizhou in the late Sui and early Tang dynasties. He was good at predicting weather conditions and his predictions were always correct. During the Sui Dynasty, he was the magistrate of Yanguan, and in the Tang Dynasty, he was the magistrate of Huojing (Linqiong). According to legend, he understood "wind prediction", that is, he could tell good or bad luck based on the sound and direction of the wind. He is also proficient in physiognomy, Liuren and the five elements. He wrote "Liu Ren Ke", "Five Elements Face Reading", "Three Lives Face Reading", "Tui Bei Tu" (co-authored with Li Chunfeng), "Yuan Tiangang's Bone Weighing Song", etc. According to the General History, there is a volume of "Yi Jing Xuan Yao", which has long been lost.

Yuan Tiangang once read the faces of Du Yan, Wang Gui and Wei Ting in Luoyang, and predicted that Du Yan would become famous for his articles; Wang Gui would be promoted to the fifth rank within ten years; and Wei Ting had a face like a tiger and would be a military officer. He also predicted that the three of them would be demoted after becoming officials, and that they would meet again at that time. As expected, during the Wude period of Emperor Gaozu of Tang, Du Yan was selected as a scholar of Tiance as an attendant censor; Wang Gui was recommended by Crown Prince Li Jiancheng to become the fifth-rank Crown Prince's Assistant, and Wei Ting was appointed as the military officer Zuowei Rate. When the three men's careers were going smoothly, they were unexpectedly implicated in a palace coup and demoted to Junzhou together, where they met Yuan Tiangang again. Yuan Tiangang read their faces again and predicted that "you will all be high-ranking officials in the end," and that they would all reach the third rank in the end. Later, the future and ending of the three people were verified to be just as he had expected. By the beginning of the Zhenguan reign of Emperor Taizong of Tang, Yuan Tiangang had become famous for his physiognomy predictions. Emperor Taizong of Tang, Li Shimin, summoned Yuan Tiangang and praised him for his exquisite and profound physiognomy. He asked him: "In ancient times, there was Jun Ping (Yan Junping of the Han Dynasty, a master of physiognomy). Now I have you, what do you think?" Yuan Tiangang replied: "Yan Junping was born at the wrong time. I am much better than him!" He asked him to read the physiognomy of Zhang Xingcheng, Ma Zhou and other important officials of the Zhenguan reign in Jiucheng Palace, and his predictions for future events were all accurate.

Legend has it that in order to predict the destiny of the Tang Dynasty, Emperor Taizong of Tang, Li Shimin, ordered two famous astronomers at the time, Yuan Tiangang and Li Chunfeng, to compile the first wonderful book of Chinese prophecy, "Tui Bei Tu". Li Chunfeng used the I Ching and Eight Trigrams to make predictions. Unexpectedly, he became addicted to it and could not stop. He even predicted the fate of China for more than 2,000 years after the Tang Dynasty. Until Yuan Tiangang pushed his back and said, "The secret of heaven cannot be revealed anymore. Go back and have a rest." Therefore, this strange book of prophecy was named "The Book of Prophecies". There are a total of sixty images in "Tui Bei Tu", and under each image there are prophecies and a "Song Yue" regulated verse, which predict the major events in Chinese history from the Tang Dynasty to the future world harmony.
