What should we pay attention to on the seventh day after an elderly person’s death?

1. After the death of a person, the 49th day after the death is the bardo period for the person. The person does not know that he or she is dead, so he or she cannot be called a ghost. Therefore, on the seventh night of the return of the soul, we must remember our ancestors and never let the deceased be sad and regretful because of family trivialities, verbal disputes or conflicts, and make them linger in the world and refuse to leave.
2. At midnight on the seventh day, there will be an ox-headed and horse-faced ghost, two big and small ghosts, and four ghost soldiers who will escort the soul of the deceased back to his home in the world of the living. Offerings can be placed at home, but beef, horse meat and dog meat are forbidden. A combination of meat and vegetables, the richer the better, is used to reward and thank the four ghost messengers and prevent them from harassing and oppressing the deceased.
3. At midnight, a bowl of water and a bowl of grains should be placed at the door of the filial room to let the ancestors wash away the dust, eliminate disasters, and avoid evil spirits. The next morning, sprinkle clean water at the door and throw the grains into the running water on the same day. On the evening of the seventh day, the offerings, along with paper money, silver bills and other offerings, should be removed and burned at a crossroads during the period of fasting.
4. It is not allowed to go to the cemetery to worship on the seventh day. On this day, the ancestral gods of each family temple will officially record the magnetic field of the deceased's tomb and come to inspect it. It is also the time for the evil spirits to look for a substitute. Therefore, if one rashly goes to the cemetery to offer sacrifices on the seventh day, firstly, it will make the ancestral temple gods and the deceased greedy for the worldly life and wait for sacrifices until death, which will oppress the living; secondly, it will avoid evil spirits.
