But many people don’t know which ethnic group’s festival the Torch Festival belongs to? What activities are there during the Torch Festival? "After all, the scenery of West Lake in June is different from that in other seasons." In the sixth month of the lunar calendar, the season paints a graceful and magnificent picture, and you are the most colorful in the year. Torch Festival is an ancient traditional festival of the Yi, Bai, Naxi, Jino, Lahu and other ethnic groups, but the dates are different. The Yi, Naxi and Jinuo ethnic groups hold it on June 24th of the lunar calendar, the Bai ethnic group holds it on June 25th, and the Lahu ethnic group holds it on June 20th. The festival lasts for two or three days. The Torch Festival has profound folk cultural connotations and is famous both at home and abroad, and is known as the "Carnival of the East." Different ethnic groups hold the Torch Festival at different times: the Yi, Naxi, and Jino nationalities hold it on June 24th of the lunar calendar; the Bai nationality holds it on June 25th; and the Lahu nationality holds it on June 20th. The festival lasts for two or three days. The main activities include bullfighting, sheep fighting, cockfighting, horse racing, wrestling, singing and dancing performances, beauty pageants, etc. In the new era, the Torch Festival has been endowed with new folk functions and has taken on new forms. The Yi Torch Festival usually lasts for three days and three nights and is divided into three stages: welcoming the fire, playing with fire, and sending off the fire.
The first day of Torch Festival: Fire worship. On this day, every village and hamlet would slaughter cattle and sheep, share the food together, and prepare wine and meat to offer sacrifices to their ancestors. When night falls, people from nearby villages will build an altar at the location selected by the elders, and light the sacred fire in the traditional way by striking stones to make fire. The Bimo (Yi folk priest) will chant scriptures to worship the fire. Then, every household, adults and children would take torches made of wormwood from the Bimo and walk around the fields, imitating the legend of Ashmao who used fire to drive away insects.
The second day of Torch Festival: passing on the fire. On this day, every household gathers under the sacred fire on the altar and holds various traditional festival activities. The boys want to imitate the legendary Atilaba by horse racing, wrestling, singing, bullfighting, sheep fighting and cockfighting. The girls imitated the legendary Ashmao, wearing beautiful clothes, holding up butter umbrellas, and dancing the "Dolohe" and Dati dances.
On this day, the most important event is the Yi beauty pageant. The elders will select the handsome man and beautiful woman of the year from among the boys and girls according to the legendary standards of Atiraba being hardworking and brave, heroic and handsome, and Ashmao being kind and intelligent, beautiful and generous. As night falls, pairs of lovers gather in the mountains, by the stream, and under yellow oil umbrellas, playing the moon guitar and mouth harp and expressing their love to each other. Therefore, some people call the Liangshan Yi International Torch Festival the "Eastern Valentine's Day".
The third day of Torch Festival: Sending off the fire. This is the climax of the entire Liangshan Yi International Torch Festival. When night falls on this day, everyone will run around holding torches. Finally, people put the torches in their hands together to form huge bonfires, and the happy people would gather around the bonfires to sing and dance to their heart's content.
The three days and three nights of the Torch Festival each have their own characteristics. After dinner every night, one family starts to light torches first, and then everyone rushes to light torches and walk out of the village. People sing torch songs, and the songs echo through the valley as the torches spread. Then they formed a fire dragon in the agreed direction and came to the public entertainment venue. They gathered the torches together and lit a big fire. The whole village gathered around the fire and danced and played games happily.
