The Origin of Mother's Day and the Founder of the Holiday

In fact, the first country to celebrate mothers' holiday was not the United States, but Greece. Every spring the ancient Greeks held grand celebrations to commemorate Cybele, the legendary mother of gods and symbol of human motherhood, but it had not yet become a formal festival. Mother's Day was officially established in the United States by an American woman named Jarvis and initiated by her daughter Anna Jarvis.
Jarvis was a kind-hearted and compassionate woman. After the end of the American Civil War, which aimed to liberate black slaves, she was responsible for teaching the Memorial Day course in school. She believed that it was the mothers who raised their children with great difficulty who contributed so many brave soldiers to the motherland and ensured the victory of the war. Their sons died for the country and bled on the battlefield, while they endured pain and sacrifice silently in the rear. Therefore, a holiday to commemorate mothers should be set up, also known as Mother's Day, to give these ordinary women some comfort.
Unfortunately, Mrs. Jarvis died before her wish came true. Later, her daughter Anna Jarvis wrote dozens of letters and sent them to the U.S. Congress to fulfill her mother's wish. Local governors and women's organizations proposed the establishment of Mother's Day. Under her advocacy and appeal, the idea of establishing Mother's Day received widespread response and support from society. In 1914, US President Wilson solemnly announced that the second Sunday of May each year, the anniversary of Mrs. Jarvis' death, would be designated as Mother's Day. And because Mrs. Jarvis liked carnations, carnations became the symbol of Mother's Day.
