How did Qingming Festival come about?

1. During the Spring and Autumn Period, Prince Chong'er of the State of Jin was exiled abroad. When he was suffering from hunger and cold, an official named Jie Zitui cut a piece of meat from his thigh and made soup for Chong'er to eat, so that he would not starve to death. Later, when Chong'er became king, he forgot to reward Jie Zitui, and Jie Zitui took the opportunity to live in seclusion in Mianshan with his mother. When Chong'er heard that Jie Zitui had gone to live in seclusion in Mianshan, he remembered his mistake and went to Mianshan in person to invite him. However, Mianshan was too big and difficult to find, so someone came up with the idea of burning Mianshan to force Jie Zitui out. However, Jie Zitui would rather die than come out. By the time the fire was put out and Jie Zitui was found, he had already died under a willow tree. Therefore, in order to commemorate Jie Zitui, Chong'er designated this day as Cold Food Festival. When Chong'er went to Mianshan to pay tribute to Jie Zitui the following year, he found that the willow tree had come back to life. So he named the tree "Qingming Willow", meaning the willow under which all things grow and is clean and bright. Then he designated the day after the Cold Food Festival as Qingming Festival. 2. The name of Qingming Festival is related to the characteristics of the weather at this time. In the beginning, Qingming Festival was not a festival, but was passed down as a solar term. According to "A Hundred Questions on Sui Shi", it was named after the fact that "all things grow at this time, and are clean and bright. So it is called Qingming." In addition, this solar term is a good time for spring ploughing and planting, so the Qingming solar term was passed down like this until the Tang Dynasty, when it was officially established as a festival.
